Hi guys

I'm busy doing my Golf 2E motor over & bought the FPR brand of piston rings @ Masterparts, but there's no info in the boxes about which ring is the 1st & 2nd compression rings.

Anyone here use this brand that can assist?

If i can't get any info on this I'll be forced to buy Hastings rings @ Alert, which i'm not a fan of.

To my knowledge the two compression rings are the same and goes at the top and the oil ring at the bottom.
Do they look different?

I know which rings are the oil rings, but it's very important that the 2 top rings go on in the correct place.

The 2 top rings do look different to each other.

Some times the two rings would have a different colour. The shiny one would go at the top as that would be the forged steel/chrome one and the darker/matt one would go second from the top as that would be cast steel/iron and is only there to seal in any compression making it past the first one. If they are the same colour, then the one with the more rounded outer edges would go at the top.

There should always be a mark on the rings to show which side of the ring should face the top, it could be any mark and wouldn't spell TOP always. But if no marks are visible, then you check the profile of the ring, it should be tapered to the one side, and the larger side of the taper should go to the top. If there's a cut away on the inside of the ring it should face down.

There is a trick to the oil rings as well, you take them and on the sides away from the gap, you squeeze them. They will always, always flip up or down to the same side, regardless of which way you hold them and squeeze. The direction the ring flips to should go to the top of the piston. This is because the ring is very slightly conical on a very big scale, and if you then fit them with the flip to the top, the large side of the conical shape is biased to the bottom of the cylinder and it scrapes the oil from the walls better.

Yeah I know about the oil ring flexing way to install it.
Was just worried about the 1st 2 rings because this is the 1st time I'm using this brand of ring & found it strange that no info was supplied with it about the ring placements.

Thanks for the info.

En so verskerp oom Boksie weer die leerlinge se denke. Ek het so bietjie vergeet van die checks, het jare laas ringe vervang.
