Salaam / Hi All,

I have been in 2 minds about the engine that will finally finds it way in the bay of the hilux.
I currently have a good condition SR20DE that came out of my Sentra when I did the swap.
The only items missing are bell housing, W58 gearbox, ECU, surge tank?
This very engine made about 120fwkw before I removed it.

Now for the purist in me;
I would really like to keep the hilux as pure as possible and would prefer to rather swap in a Toyota engine.
I have measured countless times and there is no way I will be fitting a 1UZ in there without gutting the engine bay.
I do not need the hilux to be stupid fast either, so no 1J, 2J, 3s etc is really required.

I would however like to have about 120-130fwkw with some basic mods.
I would not mind a 4age 16/20v but the current prices of engines are insane, at importers and private sellers alike.

I spoke to 2 well known mechanics that hale from the old school days of racing and knew there way around the motors of yesteryear.

The option I am more drawn towards, is dropping a Toyota 3T in the hilux and it requires minimum alteration to the cross member. Now I do not know these engines at all and would like some advise from the more knowledgeable members as to what works and what does not work on these engines to get to my target of 120-130fwkw.

The hilux will be driven often and occasionally need to tow a vehicle with a trailer, so heavy cam durations will not really be great for so called daily driving.

This is what I have in my head at the moment:
3T with original gearbox / W58
Skim the head to increase compression
Match port the head
272 / 276 degree cam
40mm Weber side draughts with proper linkages and tuned correctly
4-2-1 Branch with 57mm exhaust.

I am also aware that 20v ITB's can fitted with ECU but I am not too keen on it at the moment.

Any thoughts and/or comments?

Regards,
Henoja

If you want to save on fuel costs then you can go for the Toyota 2ct or 3ct both turbo diesels, you can upgrade the turbo for more power, but you will not get the wkw you want.
Also what about the 3L Cressida engine with gearbox, that use to be the engine of choice for the 4x4 Hilux guys before the 1uz became so popular.

I am on a bit of a tight budget although there is no rush. The turbo diesel engines are quite pricey. I can pick up a 3t and box for about R3500.
The 3L cressie engine will not fit unless the firewall is gutted.

How about the 2.2 Hilux engine or the 2.7 Hilux engine?

In Cape Town, a good condition 4y is selling for about R8k, not too sure about the 2.7 motor.
I would love a beams but at the current selling price (incl Gbox) I could probably fit either the SR or 3T, turbo charge it and still have some change left for fuel.
I guess the biggest decider would be if I can get the SR sold, there has been some interest but no takers.

If you do go 4y, I think GMW use a efi vesion of the 4y. easier way to for efi vs carb
getting the gwm intake bits.
Pity the 3tgte prices are stupid. Another option is to install the SR, and later sell it as
a install and start setup. I got my 3s sold like this in a week. Alot buyers dont wana go
through the effort we do to build a setup. I sold everything except gbox and intercooler
as a drop and start package.

Shukran / Thanks for all the feedback guys.
Will have to decide when the time comes.

Anyone have experience with the 3t motor with mods like I mentioned above?

For the price of weber's you might as well just go fuel injected and have better tuning!

I have since sold the SR20 motor. Still 2 minded about whether or not I want to swap another engine in or not.
Will give the original 12R a go for now while I think about it.

Why not a 2.4L 22R? The Hilux would stay a RN10, seems like the natural progression for me.
With a 3T you start out, before modifying, with less cubes.
Plus you should be able to find large capacity R engines, for relatively cheap.
