Was wondering. With a basic stock NA setup, Is this something that should even be attempted by a first timer?

Ive done a diy (Destroy It Yourslef) tune on my brother's car. Car is still driving, touch wood.
It's not that difficult, just takes lots of time gettting used to the program.
We used the AEM wideband and the R300 to tune.
You need to make sure the base timing is set before you hit the road.
I did fueling 1st and then timing, was a little conservative with the timing as I am still learning and didnt want to hurt the motor.
Still need to learn a lot, specially the settings, compensations etc.
This is on a Dicktator Standard btw.

I'd say go for it!! It would take alot more to destroy the engine vs trying on a turbo setup!!

Like Henoja says,get your base timing right before you hit the road!! And know the fundamentals before attempting!!

I'll be trying this on my car. But since I'm not going to spend money on an extra wide band thing, I'm going to use the PP's internal stuff. It mos has a wideband guage on there. And timing will be checked by ear and knock-o-matic...

The XMW4C has an internal wideband controler, when running the engine you can select an AFR guage to be shown on screen, so you can see what the AFR is the whole time that car is running. That's besides the Wideband map you can set up for the lambda control. So you could potentially setup a whole AFR map for it, set it to closed loop, start it and drive off. The ECU will then, according to the AFR map you set up, auto tune the values in the fuel map to give AFR's as close to what you set in the AFR map.

Oh wait you highlighted knock-o-matic...:lol:

That's a little gadget Rotor makes, has a LED that lights up when it detects knock/ping and has a sensitivity setting as well. Can also switch on a relay when knock is detected. Requires you to have a knock sensor from a Nissan, but I suspect the VW ones is the same.

Ryan has written a little bit about how it works when he took his Jetta for a tune. He says you can feel when it hits a dead cell in the fuel map, hesitates for a second and then it goes again. By the time he got to the tuner he says the car was running relatively smoothly and the map was mostly filled.

I've found a few articles on 4AGE AFR's, including one where they actually pulled the AFR map out of an old 16V ECU. I'm hoping with a bit of guess work I can setup something close enough to what it should be to get it going.

Still a bit worried about finding a tuner down here. I think they are just lazy to learn all the functions the PP has. I think GSR tunes them though.

Cool!!! I have a VW one, and I'm sure it's the same thing as the Nissan one, but I'd rather use what Rotor said. One can always check the Vw one afterwards...
